FLINTOE, JOHANNES (Copenhagen 1787 - 1870)
"Rjukan Falls"
Oil on canvas, 50x39,5cm. Unsigned. Probably painted in the 1820/30's.
Johannes Flintoe was Danish, born in Copenhagen, and educated in painting and drawing and worked as a craftsman. Because of a weak health he moved to Christiania in 1811 and lived here until he returned to Copenhagen in 1851. Flintoe is regarded to be a "key person" in the early Norwegian independent art history from 1814 up to the Norwegian national romantic movement. His Norway tours after 1819 and his friendship with William M. Carpelan were of essential importance for his career as an artist.
The great majority of Flintoe's paintings are gouaches. He mastered this technique to perfection and it became a speciality for him. But he did some oil paintings as well.
Our fine painting of Rjukan Falls is a classic view in the Norwegian art history and the impressive cascade in Telemark has been painted by several artists through the 19th Century. Our painting had earlier an attribution to W. Carpelan and there is an aquatint of Rjukan Falls in part III in his main work "Voyage pittoresque...". This shows close resemblence with our painting. However there is no reason or evidence that Carpelan ever did oil paintings ( in 1826 Carpelan participated in an exhibition in Stockholm at the Academy where it is has been supposed that he exhibited 21 oil pictures. These would more likely have been gouaches). Regarding this oilpainting of Rjukan Falls, the attribution to Flintoe is supported by the style and the technique used and the compariasion with other oil paintings by Flintoe from the 1820's. Carpelan and Flintoe worked together and borrowed motives from each other. Norsk Hydro is the owner of a large oil version by Flintoe of Rjukan Falls.

BERGSLIEN, KNUD LARSEN (Voss 1827 - Kristiania 1908)
"A scene from a peasant home at Voss 1862"
Oil on canvas, 71,5x81,5cm. Signed and dated lower right: "K. Bergslien 1862". Painted in Düsseldorf 1862
Knud Bergslien grew up at Voss near Bergen. His brother was the sculpture artist Brynjulf and the painter Nils Bergslien was his nephew. The first painting education was given Knud by Hans Reusch in Bergen. These early years portraits were his common subjects. Besides to studies in Antwerp and later in Bergen he tought pupils in drawing and painting in a "Tegneskole" founded by Lyder Sagen. Most important for him as an artist was the arrival to Düsseldorf in 1855. He stayed there no less than fourteen years until 1869 and made a great international success with his historical works like "Birkebeinerne" and several genre paintings from his home country Norway. After the Düsseldorf years he returned to Christiania and became the leader of the well reputated "Bergsliens Malerskole". Later works by Bergslien are again mostly portraits.
Knud Bergslien's best works executed during the Düsseldorf years are next to Adolph Tidemand's the most important in the Norwegian National Romantic tradition of genre paintings.
Our painting from 1862 is a masterpiece of its kind and is one of Knud Bergslien most impressive and decorative among the genre paintings. A similar work, but dated the year after in 1863 is reproduced on page 35 in Thor Warberg "Bergslien-målarane - Folkeliv i farger". Our painting is in perfect condition. The ornamented gilt frame is the original.

LIND, ANDREAS (Stjørdalen 1815 - London 1885)
"Brigada Af Drammen, Cap TN I. P. Calmeyer 1871" (Owned by Hans Scheel and later Klaveness).
Watercolour and gouache on paper, 49,5x77cm excluding text panel and margins. Signed and dated lower right: "Tegnet af Andreas Lind i London 1871". Painted in London in 1871
AN IMPRESSIVE MARINE WORK EXECUTED BY, TOGETHER WITH F. SØRVIG THE LEADING NORWEGIAN SHIP PORTRAIT PAINTER OF THE SECOND HALF OF THE 19TH CENTURY.
"Brigada" was built in St. Martins, New Brunswick, Canada in 1861. Later in 1860's it was sold to B. Holst and other in Drammen and further to Hans Scheel also in Drammen in 1867. He was the owner when Lind painted the ship. In 1872 sold to W. Klaveness, Fredriksværn and to A.F. Klaveness and other in Sandefjord 1875. The ship was sold to a ship breaker in Fredrikstad in 1898. We also find information about the vessel in the Shipping Register of Det Norske Veritas from 1870.
Andreas Lind was educated as a sea captain in Trondheim 1840 and moved to London in 1860 where he started to paint ship portraits. The ships are usually shown under full sail off a coastline and with the ship's and captain's name in a separate lining along the bottom where the letters are very accurately drawn. In London, Lind was commissioned by especially Norwegian and German captains to paint their ships.
Our very fine work by Lind showing "Brigada Af Drammen" shows the vessel under full sail calling for a pilot with white cliffs in the distance. The sky and the sails are painted in watercolour and heightened in white. The hull and the sea section is painted in gouache.
An overall light brown tone to the paper makes the impression that the colour rich areas almost stand out of the picture. In very good condition. The frame is probably the original.
Provenance: Ex-collection of the Maritime Historian Holm-Petersen of Troense, private collection Northern Germany, private collection Oslo.

NIELSEN, AMALDUS CLARIN (Mandal 1838 - Oslo 1932)
"Ensomt sted ved Mandal - A lonely place by Mandal"
Oil on canvas, 80x138cm. Signed and dated lower right: "Amaldus Nielsen 1885". By the artist inscribed in pencil on the stretcher: "Mandal Amaldus Nielsen Christiania" Painted in 1885
Amaldus Nielsen grew up in Mandal. He studied in Copenhagen c. 1854-56 and later in Düsseldorf and Karlsruhe with Hans Gude. Early he got an reputation of being "Sørlandets Maler". Amaldus Nielsen died in 1932 and his entire atelier stock was donated to Oslo Kommune.
There are known at least three quite similar versions of "Ensomt sted" of which our example from 1885 seems to be the first dated, painted the same year as "Morgen ved Ny-Hellesund" (in Nasjonalmuseet for Kunst, Arkitektur og Design). One version was exhibited in "Norges Jubileumsutstilling 1914" and another example dated 1901 is in Nasjonalgalleriet.

*The paint on the picture is thick and with a certain cracking pattern which means that it most likely was painted outdoors in the winter snow. Many of the artist's winter scenes were painted in the surrounding of Aker by Kristiania (Oslo).

GUDE, HANS FREDRIK (Christiania 1825 - Berlin 1903)

Hans F. Gude is one of Norway's most famous 19th century landscape painters. Already in 1837 he became a pupil of Flintoe in Christiania and his first study tours took place in 1839 and 40 to Vestlandet and Telemark. He arrived in Düsseldorf and the Academy under professor Schirmer in 1841 but continued his regular Norway study tours. He was appointed professor at the Academy of Düsseldorf in 1854 and from 1864 to 1880 he was a professor at the Academy in Karlsruhe. He then moved to Berlin and was appointed professor here from 1880 to 1901. A high number of Norwegian artists got their education through Gude and he had an important influence on many of them.
*An earlier unrecorded painting not listed in Frode Haverkamp's Magistergradsavhandling i kunsthistorie "Hans Gude 1825 - 1903". But a much smaller variant is listed no. 861 and illustrated with the title "Ved Østersjøen" and, according to Haverkamp, is verso by the artist entitled "Am Ostsee von Hans Gude". Our very fine painting is a typical example of Gude's studies in the reflex-and breaking phenomena in the sea.
