Scandinavia and The Arctic
PTOLEMUS, C. / LORENZ FRIES
"Norbegia et Gottia"
Woodcut map, 30,5x44,5cm LYON (1522) - 1535
AN UNRECORDED VARIANT ISSUE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION.
Early map of Scandinavia (the sixth) from the revised Waldseemüller edition (1513-20) based on the Germanus Donis map and compiled by Lorenz Fries. This third issue (1522, 1525 and the last one in 1541) has a banner above the map and was published by M. Servetus. He was some years later burnt at the stake. On Calvin's order many copies of Servetus's books followed him into the flames. It is supposed that this also included the 1535 atlas edition.
Our example has no printed page number (35) on the back, but it is replaced in ink by a contemporary hand. The lack of the printed page number is earlier unrecorded.

ORTELIUS, ABRAHAM
"Septentrionalium regionum Descrip."
Contemporary handcoloured engraving, 35,7 x 48,5 cm. ANTWERP (1570), but 1579
This important map had a main influence on the mapping of the Northern area for more than 40 years and it was published in the first book we can call a real atlas. Cartographically much influenced by Olaus Magnus and N. Zeno with their geographical mistakes still present.
Overall an age tone, but a good copy in original colour.

DE JODE, GERARD (1509 - 91)
"Septentrionalium Regionum Svetiæ, Gothiæ, Norvegiæ, Daniæ"
Contemporary handcoloured engraving, 37x49,5cm ANTWERPEN (1578) - 1593
THE SCARCE AND FAMOUS MAP IN ORIGINAL COLOUR.
The beautiful map was engraved by the Van Doetecum brothers and is geographically based on Lieven Algoet's large woodcut map. De Jode's map publishing business was already from the start in the shadow of Ortelius even though the quality of the maps is similar and sometimes better than that of Ortelius. The business failed and only two editions were published in 1578 and 1593. Maps of either edition are scarce.
Cropped into the grade scale all around, affecting some letters of the reverse text on the left hand side, bottom scale with some small paper damages. Some small oxidizing cracks in the area of Poland.
