PTOLEMUS, C. / LORENZ FRIES
"Norbegia et Gottia"
Woodcut map, 30,5x44,5cm LYON (1522) - 1535
AN UNRECORDED VARIANT ISSUE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION.
Early map of Scandinavia (the sixth) from the revised Waldseemüller edition (1513-20) based on the Germanus Donis map and compiled by Lorenz Fries. This third issue (1522, 1525 and the last one in 1541) has a banner above the map and was published by M. Servetus. He was some years later burnt at the stake. On Calvin's order many copies of Servetus's books followed him into the flames. It is supposed that this also included the 1535 atlas edition.
Our example has no printed page number (35) on the back, but it is replaced in ink by a contemporary hand. The lack of the printed page number is earlier unrecorded.

THE DECORATIVE PEAK IN THE MAPPING OF NORWAY
BLAEU, JOAN (1596 - 1673)
["The complete set of 9 maps of Norway"]
9 contemporary handcoloured engravings, each. c. 42x53cm AMSTERDAM 1662
AN EXCELLENT GROUP OF MAPS FROM ATLAS MAJOR.
The complete set of maps of Norway by Blaeu consists of the general map of Norway, the three maps of the Bishopric "Stavangriensis" with the south-east part of Norway, the Bergen area, Trøndelag, Finnmark, Jan Mayen and Spitsbergen. Together they form the most decorative set of antique maps of Norway ever published. Eight of the maps from the set were new and created for "Atlas Major", Blaeu's last, but huge map project. The copperplates were destroyed in the big fire of Amsterdam in 1672 which ruined Blaeu's business. Our set is from the first Latin text edition. Other language editions were in Spanish, French, German and Dutch. The"Norvegia Regnum", the second map of the country has a dedication to Prince Christian who in 1670 became the King Christian V of Denmark-Norway.

PONTOPPIDAN, ERICH (1698 - 1764)
"The Natural History of Norway"
The complete book. Folio, 35,5 x 22,5cm Contemporary vellum (later front- and endpapers (?), vellum cracks to spine, gilt title label of a later date) Two parts in one volume. With 28 engraved plates and a large outline coloured folding map of Norway. LONDON 1755
A SPECIAL COPY WITH THE PLATES IN A PROOF STATE.
A decorative copy of an important "Norvegica book". Rarely seen in vellum binding. Erich Pontoppidan was a Danish-Norwegian theologian and served as a bishop in Bergen from 1747 to 1754. His experience from here influenced this comprehensive work. The English edition is based on the Danish first edition 1752 - 53, but with new engravings and expanded with a large map. The folding map "corrected by Martin Hubner" is based on Homann from c. 1712. Some of the prints are supposed to have been based on works by Mathias Blumenthal who lived in Bergen. In this copy most of the engraved plates seem to appear in a proof state before the printed numbers 1-28 and the printed pagination guide for the bookbinder. Instead the plates are numbered in ink by a contemporary hand.
Some old library stamps "York Subscription Library" and minor notes on the title verso, some leaves with a coat of arms blind stamp. The upper corner of page 51/52 torn off, a small discreet collector's stamp on each plate, these are also numbered in ink by a contemporary hand, the engraved plates in a proof state. Leaf pp 219/220 cancelled as usual.
