PTOLEMUS, C. / LORENZ FRIES
"Norbegia et Gottia"
Woodcut map, 30,5x44,5cm LYON (1522) - 1535
AN UNRECORDED VARIANT ISSUE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION.
Early map of Scandinavia (the sixth) from the revised Waldseemüller edition (1513-20) based on the Germanus Donis map and compiled by Lorenz Fries. This third issue (1522, 1525 and the last one in 1541) has a banner above the map and was published by M. Servetus. He was some years later burnt at the stake. On Calvin's order many copies of Servetus's books followed him into the flames. It is supposed that this also included the 1535 atlas edition.
Our example has no printed page number (35) on the back, but it is replaced in ink by a contemporary hand. The lack of the printed page number is earlier unrecorded.

VAN DEN KEERE, PIETER (1571 - 1646)
"Daniae Regni Typus"
Contemporary handcoloured engraving, 38x49cm AMSTERDAM before 1623
A VERY RARE MAP AND ISSUE.
This original issue with the "Van den Keere" imprint is not listed by Bramsen. but he refers to a later issue of the same map from 1630 with Cloppenburg's signature. Other later issues are by Hondius and Dancker Danckerts. Bramsen says that some copies of the map in the Cloppenburg issue are to be found in J. Pontanus's "Rerum Danicarum Historia". However none of the copies of the book we have seen or heard about have had this Denmark map included, instead the folded Janssonius "carte-a-figures map" of Denmark has been bound into the volume. Our example has the normal centrefold which could indicate that it has been bound in an atlas. In very fine, original condition with decorative period colours.
We are greatful to Mr. Nils G. Germundson, Zürich for helping us to date this map.

SENN, JOHANNES(1780 - 1861)
["Two women in costumes from Husum"]
Watercolour on paper, 43x34cm. Signed and indistinctly inscribed and dated lower right KØBENHAVN 1806 (?)
According to a letter from etnolog Hanne Dalgaard in Copenhagen 1999, these costumes are from the village Ostenfeld in Husum in South-Schleswig and is most likely executed in connection with Senn's preparations for "Danske Nationale Klædedragter". Other artists involved were J. Rieter and C.W. Eckersberg. Senn was a Suiss artist from Basle. In 1803 Rieter from Copenhagen visited Senn in Zürich and persuaded him to follow him back to Denmark in order to help him with a folk-costumes set. On the way to Copenhagen, they stopped first in Holsten and on the Frisian Islands where they studied folk-costumes and probably made the sketch for our watercolour. In 1812 - 15 Senn also published "Norske Nationale Klædedragter". We have several examples of these prints later in the catalogue. Original drawings or watercolours by Senn are extremely rare.
